Diaz to be the subject of EPA meeting

The Environmental Protection Agency will host a meeting on November 13 to discuss plans for clearing the toxic chemicals out of the Diaz Chemical plant.

Since Diaz's closing in May, the EPA has been charged with oversight of the vacated Jackson Street site. A crew was mobilized to develop a risk assessment of the threats at the site, EPA officials said.

EPA crews will work to clear the former plant site of chemicals and will determine if the remaining items should be relocated to a landfill or a hazardous waste site.

Eleven families are still displaced because of the January 5, 2002 chemical release.

The Thursday, November 13 meetings will be held at the fire hall from 1 to 4 p.m. and again from 6 to 9 p.m.
