Record number may run
in Thanksgiving Day benefit race
Pre-registration is keeping pace with last year's record number to run the 2003 Thanksgiving Day Race with Grace 10K (RWG) benefiting the Huntington's Disease Society of America. Hosted at First Bible Baptist Church, 1039 North Greece Road, the race has been named one of New York's finest races by "New England Runner" magazine. As a certified 10K road race, it has become a favorite with runners locally and across the Northeast.
Nearly $9,500 was raised for the society at the 2002 RWG. 947 registered to run, including 183 same day registrants despite temperatures in the 20's and a light snowfall. A total of 871 runners finished the course.
A certified road race, the Race with Grace is recognized throughout New England as a top event. Because of its national status, the race is a serious event for many local runners. Following a flat, fast course that encompasses Latta, Manitou and Mill roads, the race begins at 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, 0.4 miles south of the First Bible Baptist Church property on North Greece Road and finishes in the north parking lot of the church. $3,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded to race winners in several different categories.
This event was first run in 1991 as a community outreach of the church's Grace & Truth Athletics. Open to the running community at large, the race is staffed by over 100 volunteers who give their morning to take care of the needs of the runners. Hundreds of friendships have been forged over the past twelve years - especially among the 100% Club, comprised of nine men and one woman who have run in all twelve of the previous races. They look forward to this event as a "family reunion" as much as to another opportunity for good-natured competition.
