Pratt scores 18 in opening loss
Sophomore Kacey Pratt led the Spencerport Rangers with 18 points, but they opened the 2003-04 campaign with a 42-41 loss to a Rush-Henrietta team expected to compete with Hilton and Penfield for a girl's basketball sectional title.
After falling behind 6-0 to open the game, the Rangers drew to within one point on freshman Andrea Kazmierski's three-pointer with just fifteen seconds left in the first quarter. The Royal Comets started the second quarter with a 14-2 spurt and had a 24-11 lead before the Rangers scored the last four points of the half on two baskets from Pratt and a ten-foot jumper by Kazmierski.
Spencerport drew to within four points at 27-23 with four minutes left in the third quarter on free throws and an offensive put-back by senior Jenna King. But R-H scored six of the final seven points in the quarter to take a nine-point lead and never looked back in the fourth quarter.
"We're a young team starting two sophomores and a freshman and bringing another freshman off the bench, so we're building," said Ranger head coach Mark Moon. "This was a tough draw for our first game of the season."
Pratt finished 8-10 from the foul line and had three blocks and 10 rebounds for Spencerport. King also finished with ten rebounds and was 4-7 from the line. Kazmierski added nine points.
