Blue Devils in first in volleyball
Brockport swept Hilton 25-13, 25-16 and 25-13 in high school girls volleyball to improve to 8-0 in league and first place as the team prepares for the stretch run. The Cadets played the Blue Devils tough early in all three games before Brockport would find the extra gear late in each contest.
In the first game, the Blue Devils rallied for an 11-3 finish after the Cadets had closed to within four points. Jackie Steubing served the final five points including one of her match-high four aces.
Hilton held a two-point lead at 8-6 in the second game on kills by Laura Stanton and Shannon Byrne, but Brockport came back to tie the game at 8-8. Hilton pulled to within three points at 19-16, but Jamie Hugelmaier registered consecutive kills as Brockport scored the final six points of the game.
The third game mirrored the same pattern with host Hilton tying the game at 6-6 before the visitors had a 5-0 run. Hilton again pulled to within three points at 14-11, but an 11-2 run sealed the match for the Blue Devils.
Sonia Sloan led Hilton with 14 digs ad Jonelle Redhead had four blocks and five kills. Hugelmaier, who led with 12 digs with seven kills, paced Brockport. Ashley Olsheski dished out 14 assists and Danielle LeBeau had nine kills with seven digs.
The Blue Devils lead second place Churchville-Chili by two games and third place Penfield by three. Hilton fell to 2-9 overall for the season.
