Winter fun
with lots of snow
An afternoon of winter fun was on the menu at the Town of Parma's Winterfest Celebration held on Saturday, February 7 at Parma Town Hall Park. The piles and piles of snow were the main attraction at this year's event thanks to a record-breaking snowfall in January. A large bonfire kept park patrons warm, but many adventurous individuals enjoyed the snowmobile rides from the Hilton Sno-Flyers, a horse drawn wagon ride, strapped on a pair of cross-country skis, or went ice fishing. Children had the opportunity to play several winter-themed carnival games, and the "eggciting" toy hunt (500 plastic toy-filled eggs buried in a snowpile) made digging popular.
"The Winterfest Celebration was the perfect opportunity to showcase the Parma Town Park," Director of Recreation Steve Fowler said. "The Town Park is our community's greatest resource for recreational activities, and we are quite pleased with the turnout at this annual event," said Fowler.
The ice sculpture demonstration by Jeff Bleier produced a four-foot depiction of the cartoon character Popeye standing on his boat eating spinach. This sculpture is presently on display between the tennis courts and basketball courts. A small fireworks display lit up the winter sky at the end of the day. Organizers thank the Hilton baseball organization who handled the food concessions, ran the kids games, and helped hand out the cross-country skis; the Parma Special Police who handled the crowd control, Parma's EMT unit and Fire Department for being on site at this year's event, and the Parma Parks Department for handling the preparation, clean-up chores, and organizing the ice fishing opportunity.
