Spencerport BOE to address bus issues
A plan will be proposed to the Spencerport Central School District Board of Education on March 9 to add additional buses to the school bus fleet so that elementary students can get home earlier and activity buses could be restored.
Under the proposed plan, the district plans to purchase four to eight additional buses next year. These would be in addition to the annual bus replacement plan.
"Busing is a complex issue," said Fred Seiler, assistant superintendent for business. "We are looking at elementary school dismissal times, shuttle buses and activity buses. Plus, we take children to non-public schools, special education programs and to any daycare program within the district boundaries, even if the program is not within the student's specific school boundaries."
The goal for next year is to get elementary students home earlier, restore activity buses K-12, and reduce the need for elementary shuttle buses. Fourteen buses are currently used to shuttle children between schools where they pick up another bus. The goal is to reduce that number to six shuttle buses, according to district officials.
The proposed plan will require additional expenditures to operate the additional buses.
Details of the proposed busing plan will be presented at the March 9 board meeting. The session begins at 7 p.m. in the boardroom of the Administration Building, 71 Lyell Avenue.
