Golden Eagles in Sweet 16
Brockport used a 15-4 run early in the second half to overcome a five-point deficit and defeat Trinity College 80-76 and advance to the NCAA Division III Sweet Sixteen for the third time in four years. The Golden Eagles also defeated Trinity in the 2002 Tournament.
A long three pointer by David Andrews at the buzzer salvaged a rough first half for the Golden Eagles, but they still trailed the Bantams by two points. Trinity built that lead to five in the second half before Brockport received consecutive baskets from Randy Bills, Andrews and Brandon Williams to cut into the lead. They went on top for good with just under 14 minutes left on a Brandon Mills lay-up.
Mills made a pair of free throws late in the second half giving Brockport a game-high seven-point lead before Trinity's John Halas hit two long three-pointers in the closing seconds sandwiched around two Chris Hopkins free throws to make the score close.
SUNYAC Player of the Year Charlie Croff led all scorers with 25 points and eight rebounds for Brockport. Spencerport native Mills scored 15 and Orlando Nazario had eleven.
"It's an unbelievable feeling," said Mills. "When we lost the SUNYAC championships (to Potsdam), my heart was broken. I wanted to get here so badly and we thought we weren't going to make it. Then when we got into the tournament, it's been a great week."
Says head coach Nelson Whitmore: "With Bills, Croff and Mills all making it three trips to the Sweet Sixteen in four years, I don't think there are a lot of basketball players at any level who can say that. I am certainly happy for those guys and we're looking forward to next weekend."
Brockport was to face the number one team in the country - Williams College - on March 12.
