Brockport historic postmark
honors the village's 175th year
A Brockport village historic postmark will be presented on Tuesday, April 6 at the Brockport Post Office, 14 South Main Street. As part of this year's 175th anniversary celebration of the village's founding, the image on the postmark will be the "Decker Block" at the corner of Main and Market Streets as it appeared in 1877. It is the building where the "Bittersweet" store and other businesses are now located.
There will be a brief inauguration ceremony for the postmark at 8:30 a.m. with Brockport Mayor Jo Matela and other village officials attending along with Brockport Postmaster Donna Chichester.
The historic postmark project was initiated by Village Historian Jackie Morris who first contacted Chichester in late December. Chichester worked on producing the postmark, first obtaining approval from the U.S. Post Office headquarters in Washington, D.C. for the image that was taken from an old postcard.
Stamped envelopes can be cancelled at the special Post Office window only on April 6 from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Blank envelopes and first-class postage "flag stamps" will be available for any customers who do not have their own. The postmark will be listed in the U.S. Postal Bulletin for anyone who wishes to send envelopes to the Brockport Post Office to receive the special cancellation by the May 7 deadline. A self-addressed stamped return envelope should be enclosed with the letters to be postmarked.
"It's an exciting event for the village and for the stamp collectors out there," Chichester said. "Having the special postmark is a nice souvenir for anyone, including people who have moved away."
