Holley Community Free Library
to offer BOCES 2 Literacy Program
The BOCES 2 Center for Workforce Development (CWD) soon will be bringing its Literacy Program to Holley Community Free Library, so adults of all ages, no matter where they live, can improve their reading skills, prepare to earn their General Education Diploma (GED), learn English as a second language, or sharpen their work skills free of charge.
Those interested in the Literacy Program are invited to attend the Open House on Wednesday, April 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. The Holley Community Free Library is located at 86 Public Square in Holley.
The program is open to adults age 21 or older without a high school diploma or who have a high school diploma, but scored at or below a ninth-grade reading or math level. Young adults ages 18-21 who live in one of the BOCES 2 component districts may also participate.
A teacher will be available every Tuesday night in the library's meeting room, where participants will also have access to computers with literacy and GED specific software. At home, students will use workbooks and videotapes to learn on their own, and can correspond with instructors over the phone or by mail. The workbooks and videos are provided free of charge. If at least 12 students can commit, they can be part of a traditional class.
The program is structured, yet informal, where students can determine when they meet with their instructor. "They are expected to devote about five or six hours a week to the program, but we're respectful of different lifestyles and learning styles," said Claire Franek, Holley Library director.
For information, call Claire Franek at 638-6987 and ask to speak to her directly. Public transportation to the library is available through Orleans Transit Services.
