Sweden's new town clerk
familiar with municipal processes
When Janet Olivieri was appointed to the position of town clerk for the Town of Sweden in January, the return to familiar surroundings and tasks was like coming home.
For the past two years, Olivieri had worked in the business office of the Brockport Central School District, but prior to that she had worked for the town as the building department clerk and the planning department secretary. "I was also deputy town clerk and deputy receiver of taxes," she said "I wore a lot of hats in my time with the town."
Meeting people and being able to interact with them and help them out are some of the rewards of being a town clerk, she said. "Everyday is something different and someone different coming in with a request," she said of her duties, which range from selling hunting and fishing licenses to issuing marriage licenses and permits for the recycling center.
Olivieri and her husband, Gino, built a house and moved to Sweden seven years ago. "When we were building the house I became familiar with the process you have to go through as far as building and site plans were concerned and during that time I met a lot of people in the town hall," she said. "And when a position became available I applied for it and started working here."
"We're excited to have Janet back in the office in the capacity of Town Clerk," Nat "Buddy" Lester, town supervisor said. "Her previous experience here in the planning and building departments, tax office and as a deputy town clerk is very helpful in the transition process. We already know she possesses a great rapport with the public and she's definitely a team player."
Olivieri, who replaced Gail DeToy as town clerk when she retired, is a native of Pennsylvania. The new town clerk earned a degree in business administration from the University of Delaware and also earned a degree from Roberts Wesleyan College in organizational management. "This job really lets me put my degrees to work," she said.
She and her husband have three children: Frank, who is attending Ithaca College; Gina, who is attending the University of Maryland and Michelle, who is attending Aquinas Institute.
