Holley's Andrew Grillo named state wrestling champ
Senior Andrew Grillo made the Holley School District proud when he was recently named state wrestling champion. In addition to being first in the state, Grillo went undefeated this season with a record of 42-0. This is the first time a wrestler has gone undefeated in Holley history. Holley has had two other state representatives before Andrew - his brother, Ashley John, who placed fifth in states, and Adam Ezell, who placed fourth.
Andrew Grillo's career record is 186-11, with eight losses in overtime and by one point. He has never lost a dual meet in five years. His other wrestling accomplishments include being a four-time Genesee Region County Champion, a four-time Section V Class Champion, All American in the USA Freestyle National Championships by placing fifth, and a double gold medal winner in the Empire State Games in Freestyle and Greco Roman in the same year. Grillo recently won the Super Sectionals where he was named Most Valuable Wrestler. The week before, he was MVP of the Genesee Region League. "This feels really great," said Andrew. "It's been a lot of hard work the past five years and it's all paid off."
Academically, Andrew has a 91 percent average. 3.6 GPA, has achieved high honor roll every year and is a member of the National Honor Society. He plans to attend SUNY Brockport next year and major in physical education.
This season, the Holley Wrestling Team finished 19-3 overall and was undefeated in dual meets, won the Genesee Region Division I, League and Tournament, is ranked number one in Section V Small Schools, and ranked in the top eight in NYS Small Schools. The team also won the Section V BBB Championship for the sixth time in the past seven years.
