Hamlin resident James Doan, a partner in the Doan Family Farms, participated in a three-state meeting in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, discussing problems facing both producers and rural communities. Taking part were 29 representatives from New York state, 30 from Pennsylvania, and 15 from New Mexico.

All 29 representatives from New York were affiliated with LEAD New York, an Ithaca-based Cooperative Extension program that develops leaders for the state's food and agriculture industry, and explores possible short and long-range solutions for the wise use of agricultural land resources. LEAD New York director Lawrence Van De Walk said the meeting in Pennsylvania brought together a cross section of highly knowledgeable figures to discuss current problems facing the agriculture industry, food packers and related firms.

Key topics discussed were land use, land development, leadership, and networking. A presentation was also given on how the Union forces managed to win the Battle of Gettysburg. History has shown, scholars pointed out, the importance and value of good leadership, including communication and judgment skills.
