Brockport to be home to farmer's market
More than 50 people gathered recently to discuss plans for a Farmer's Market in the Village of Brockport. Representatives from about 25 farms attended the meeting which was hosted by Scott Winner, director of economic development, and Carrie Maziarz, farmers' market manager.
"We were thrilled with the turnout. The interest level and enthusiasm were terrific," Maziarz said. "We already have a dozen farmers signed up."
Diane Eggert, a representative of the New York Farmers' Market Federation, who was in attendance, said, "I've worked on establishing new farmers' markets in many communities around the state, but the hard work and dedication put into the planning of this market by the village and the overwhelming response from the farmers to the market was exceptional."
Winner said he hopes the farmers' market will stimulate commercial activity in the downtown commercial district on Sundays when the market is open. "We believe the farmers' market will give a boost to our merchants and we know that some of them are planning on opening two or more hours earlier on Sundays to try and capitalize on the weekly event," he said.
Winner said the market would operate from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays beginning June 20 and would run through October 31. "So far we have 12 applications from various farmers who want to participate," he said during the April 19 board meeting.
