Noone Post 954 and auxiliary unit
select Boys and Girls State Reps
Harvey C. Noone Post 954 and its Auxiliary Unit have selected their respective representatives to the annual American Legion New York State Boys and Girls programs.
The basic objective of these programs is to train the representatives in how state government should function. They elect a full compliment of state officials and committees and then proceed on a five day program of enactment of governing. In so doing, they learn to compromise, co-operate, effective leadership qualities, discipline, and respect for God, country and community, according to Ed Moore, Commander of the Noone Post. The representatives must be juniors in high school. The selection is rigid and begins with a screening process conducted locally by Marjorie Boudens, guidance counselor at Churchville-Chili Central School, of highly qualified students based on academics, personality, accomplishments and attitude. The Post and Auxiliary select several members as final screeners who review each candidate's resume and then conduct personal interviews before making the final decisions.
The Post and Past Commanders Club will sponsor three representatives again this year to Boys State held annually at Morrisville College. They are: Ryan Miller, Powers Lane; Ben Walence, Attridge Road; Chris Brugger, Savage Road.
The Girls State program rotates each year from college to college across the state. This year the area will be honored by hosting the program at the SUNY campus in Brockport. The Auxiliary representative is Rebecca Hyland of Chestnut Ridge Road. Thus, four Churchville-Chili students will be representing the area in these two programs. Noone Post 954 and the Auxiliary pay the entire cost for these students to attend. An honor for them and a privilege for us, Moore said.
