Boater Safety certification classes offered
The Orleans County Sheriff's Office, in partnership with the United States Power Squadron, has scheduled the next round of boat safety classes. These classes will be held at the Carlton Fire Department Recreation Hall on State Route 98 in Carlton Station, approximately 2.5 miles north of Route 104. Classes are three hours in duration and attendance at all four classes is required for certification. Class dates are May 10, 12, 17 and 19.
As of January 1, 2004 - all persons (regardless of age) operating Personal Water Craft on New York state waters are required to have this certification. Persons under the age of eighteen who operate a boat without adult supervision are required to have this certification as well. Certification is valid in all 50 states and Canada.
There is a $20 fee payable to the U.S. Power Squadron, which covers the cost of a book. Two persons attending these classes may share a book.
Anyone interested in attending these classes should contact Deputy Jim Halstead of the Sheriff's Marine Unit at 585-682-4366 or 585-590-4142.
