Girl Scouts honor Hilton volunteer
The Girl Scouts of Genesee Valley, Inc. (GSGV) honored outstanding volunteers at its 13th Annual Adult Recognition Gala on Thursday, April 22.
"We applaud the contributions of our more than 5,000 adult volunteers who actively enrich the lives of girls and young women in our community," said Ann Sartwell, GSGV Chief Executive Officer. "Girl Scout volunteers are exceptional people. We are pleased to recognize the special efforts of our volunteers who enable girls to develop skills necessary to succeed in our global economy."
GSGV awarded an Honor Pin to Mary Thran of Hilton for outstanding service to Girl Scouting. Thran, GSGV's older girl program specialist, was recognized for the energy and remarkable organizational skill she dedicated to developing and facilitating the Freedom's Rites Wider Opportunity.
The Wider Opportunity hosted 100 girls from across the United States and from Scotland and South Africa. Freedom's Rites was a two-week residential project to introduce girls to the Suffragette Movement, Underground Railroad and Women in Victorian times and to help them appreciate their hard-earned rights. After two years of planning, Freedom's Rites continues as a Girl Scout patch program and as a one-week day camp this summer. The curriculum is available to schools and youth organizations.
