"Step up to the Plate" project's
focus is on community and youth

Coaches, neighbors, employers, educators, faith leaders, parents, teens and families are invited to come together on May 25 to focus on creating character and competence in youth. The "Step Up to the Plate" project's goal is to learn and share new ideas for improving the lives of area youth. This is the third annual "Promise of Assets" event.

Workshops offered will be based on the America's Promise Initiative and the 40 Developmental Assets.

The promises are based on the asset approach to youth development, promoted by the Search Institute and provide a framework to help youth become healthy, caring, successful adults.

"Step Up to the Plate" is scheduled for May 25, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Genesee Community College in Batavia. The registration deadline has been extended until May 10. The cost of registration is $20 for adults, and a youth can attend free with an adult. Additional youth may attend for $10. The event begins with a presentation by Daniel Doctor, an educator and entertainer, well known for his talent and wit. He will share his ideas about how young people can identify, develop and share their individual talents.

Two workshops sessions are followed by dinner and an ice cream social. The dinner speaker is Ron DiCarli, Superintendent of the Akron Schools. His message for youth is one of encouragement and perseverance in the process of discovering the power of positive behavior.

Contact the Genesee County Youth Bureau 585-344-3960 to register.
