SUNY Brockport in NCAAs Tourney
Hilton's Morgan first team all-star
SUNY Brockport won their first SUNYAC Baseball Championship since 1975 and is heading to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in its 58-year history as a result.
"It is truly unbelievable to beat the best team in the region," head coach Mark Rowland said about his team's sweep of top seed Cortland to advance. "We had to play two perfect games and we did just that."
Brockport pitchers finished the tournament with 22 consecutive innings of shutout baseball over three games capped by Shawn Mahoney's complete game shutout in game one and combining with Jason Waite and Ben Kimball in the nightcap.
Cortland had won the last seven SUNYAC titles and had never lost a game in the tournament prior to this season.
Senior outfielder Matt Johnson was chosen SUNYAC Player of the Year and was joined on the First Team by junior second baseman and Hilton graduate John Morgan and pitcher Ben Kimball.
Morgan was the only Golden Eagle to start all 40 games this season while batting .300 and leading the team in runs scored and walks. He finished second on the team in doubles and RBI.
Johnson led the team with a .362 batting average and led with 50 hits, 17 doubles, three homers and 34 RBI in 40 games.
NCAA Tournament play will begin May 20 at a site to be announced on Sunday, May 16.
