"Fire on the Genesee" Civil War Encampment
at Letchworth State Park
The 4th annual "Fire on the Genesee" Civil War Encampment and Living History event is being held at the Highbanks Recreation Area in Letchworth State Park on May 22 and 23. Participants include both Union and Confederate troops as well as Civilian Sutlers.
Camps open at 9:30 a.m. each day. Battle re-enactments are featured each afternoon at 2 p.m. as well as a variety of civilian activities throughout the day. Visitors can stroll through the camps and experience the life of an 1860s soldier, purchase period items from the Sutlers, attend a ladies parlor, the "Blue and Grey Masquerade Dance" or a 19th Century church service. There will also be displays of memorabilia and artifacts from 136th New York Volunteers. The regiment was recruited from Western N.Y. and trained at Camp Williams, now the site of the Parade Grounds area, in Letchworth State Park.
There is no fee for the event; a $6 per car Vehicle Use Fee is charged for admission to the park. For information contact the Letchworth State Park Visitor Center at 585-493-3600.
