Wright RBI helps Blue Devils advance
Playoff time is a time for experienced players to shine. Seniors Kellie Wright and Michele Collichio did just that as they combined for the first run of the game in the fifth inning as 8th-seeded Brockport defeated 9th-seeded Webster-Schroeder 2-0 in the first round of the Class AA high school softball sectional playoffs.
One inning after leaving the bases loaded without scoring, Collichio got on base by beating out an infield single to deep short. Wright then laced a two-out, RBI triple to left-center to give Brockport a 1-0 lead. The Blue Devils got an insurance run one inning later on a Shannon Connors leadoff triple to left-center followed by a sacrifice fly to center by Ashley Gaisser to drive in the run.
Sophomore Bethany Dragert was cruising with a no-hitter through four innings for Brockport before allowing a single in the fifth inning. With the base runner bunted over to second and third, Dragert ended the threat with a strikeout - one of her five for the game. She allowed just one two-out runner in the sixth and retired the side in order in the seventh inning to complete the one-hitter.
Brockport improved their record to 12-8 and advanced to the quarterfinals against 16th-seeded Penfield who upset top-seeded East High 15-1 in the first round.
