Meningitis vaccine clinics
scheduled for college-bound students
The Monroe County Department of Public Health will conduct meningococcal vaccination clinics at its offices located at 111 Westfall Road on the following dates: Mondays, June 7 and 21, Mondays, July 12 and 26, and Mondays, August 2 and 16. All clinics are from 3 to 7 p.m.
The vaccine provides protection against several strains of meningococcal bacteria. First year college students, especially those who live in dormitories are at a higher risk of contracting this serious illness, according to Monroe County health officials.
Meningococcal bacteria can cause meningitis, which is an infection of the lining that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. These bacteria can also cause an infection of the blood. The organisms are spread through the exchange of respiratory and throat secretions (coughing and kissing). Symptoms include fever, headache, rash, stiff neck and vomiting. The disease is fatal in 5 to 15 percent of cases. Early diagnosis and quick treatment with antibiotics are important. The vaccine does not offer protection against viral meningitis.
The cost of the vaccine is $80. Cash, check, Visa and MasterCard are accepted forms of payment. Persons with Child Health Plus, Family Health Plus or Medicaid should bring their insurance card to the clinic.
