Parabolic solar
oven really works!
The focal point of the parabolic dish solar oven so concentrates the sun's energy that food can be cooked. This use of solar energy was explored by technology students at Hilton's Merton Williams Middle School last month in teachers Jim Reichert's and Matt Wermuth's classes. From left, front, are seventh graders: Jen Hammill and Keri Galatio with teachers Reichert and Wermuth. "The parabolic dish is used in Africa for cooking, Reichert said. "On a good day the temperature can get up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit." Students researched and built several different types of solar ovens and cooked hotdogs, pizza and s'mores. Submitted photo.
