Maziarz/Hoyt bill to improve Workers' Compensation

A new bill providing for the electronic deposit of workers compensation payments was recently passed by the NYS Senate and Assembly. Senator George D. Maziarz (R-C, North Tonawanda) and Assemblymember Sam Hoyt (D-Buffalo, Grand Island) said the new bill gives workers compensation recipients the option of having their compensation payments directly deposited into a bank account. While not mandating such payments, the bill seeks to ensure the option of electronic transfers upon request. The absence of such an option is considered by many to be an evident anomaly.

"I see no reason why injured workers should not be able to get their workers' comp payments through direct deposit," Maziarz said. "Many injured workers suffer mobility problems and having access to this automatic system would ensure they get their payments conveniently and regularly."

Late payments as a result of mail delays, holidays and unforeseen incidents have caused problems for some. The new bill aims to remove obstacles to the timely and efficient payment of what are often vitally needed funds. An electronic payment system is expected to bypass such dispersal problems by disseminating funds directly to claimants accounts.

This legislation is now waiting to be sent to the Governor for his signature.
