LMH Twig Association awards scholarships
The Lakeside Memorial Hospital Twig Association recently awarded its annual scholarships to 10 deserving students. These scholarships are presented to students who are working toward a degree in the health care field. This year's recipients are: Elizabeth Faulknor of Hilton; Lisa Hughes and Jacqueline Shillington of Holley; Adam McCrea and Cristy Sigler of Hamlin; and Anne Downey of Albion. They are all previous scholarship recipients. Stacie Coon and Jen Overfield of Hamlin; Kelly Mirra of Bergen and Monica Slater of Holley were new scholarship recipients. Alternate winners are Nicole Barrett and Tiffany Harrison.
Coon, Overfield and Slater attended the presentation ceremony. "I grew up here and came back last July to care for my grandfather who was sick with cancer. I realized then that I wanted to work in the health care field. I'm looking forward to working in Obstetrics when I finish school," Slater stated. She will be attending Genesee Community College.
Coon is enrolled in the 3-1-3 program at SUNY at Brockport and will continue in the SUNY nursing degree program this fall. She stated, "For the longest time I couldn't picture myself in any career. I helped take care of my dad after he had an operation, so when I looked through the college catalogs, I realized that I could picture myself as a nurse and caring for people."
Overfield will be attending Conesus College in the fall. "I always wanted to go into the medical field. Interning at the hospital reinforced the fact that I wanted to work in an Emergency Department. My mom is a nurse and my dad is a physical therapist, so my whole family is in the health care field," Overfield said.
The Twig Association has been awarding $500 scholarships to 10 students each year who are working toward a degree in a health care related field.
