Youth participate in 12th Annual Youth Fishing Jamboree

Cornell Cooperative Extension's 4-H Sport-fishing and Aquatic Resources Education Program (SAREP) and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservative (NYSDEC) hosted the 12th Annual Youth Fishing Jamboree on June 12. Over 40 boys and girls and their families gathered at NYSDEC's Twin Cedars Environmental Area in East Avon to develop skills, meet new friends, and enjoy fishing in the warm afternoon sun.

The purpose of the program is to involve youth in fishing and through that interest, instill an understanding and appreciation for aquatic ecology, fishery science and environmental stewardship.

Workshop topics included: Microinvertibrate Safari, Water Quality, Fish Identification, Knot Tying, Fishing Safety, and Casting Techniques. In addition to the workshops, the event included a picnic, games and a fishing derby.
