DeToy bids Brockport board farewell
Emotions ran high as Trustee Peter DeToy bid farewell to fellow board members at the June 21 regular board meeting. DeToy, who is retiring, has served the Village of Brockport as a trustee since September 1, 1993.
"I've truly enjoyed my ten plus years as a trustee, serving the people and the village that I love," DeToy said, swallowing back the tears. "I have always prided myself on speaking my mind and doing the right thing for the right reason."
DeToy was treated to a gift and a cake at the conclusion of the meeting. "I wish my biggest supporter, my wife Gail, could be here tonight," he said. His wife was home resting, he said, because she had been diagnosed with pneumonia earlier in the day. "She's fine but I wish she could have been here tonight."
Brockport Mayor Josephine Matela presented DeToy with a proclamation commending him on his commitment to the community through his contribution of time and knowledge. DeToy, the proclamation read, was known for making difficult decisions and for doing what he deemed best for the community and for his volunteerism as evidenced by his service on various committees and projects.
Trustee Mort Wexler said that it was no secret that he and DeToy have not always gotten along but, "I trusted his opinion and I wish him well in his retirement," he said.
Trustees James Whipple and Norman Knapp echoed Wexler's well wishes on DeToy's retirement.
At the close of the meeting, resident Inga Songbird took to the podium and in a heartfelt speech, extolled DeToy's virtues and the fact that he was always there for the children. "I'm going to miss you, Pete," she said.
DeToy received a standing ovation from the audience as Matela presented him with the official signed proclamation.
