Shealyn R. Stenglein, daughter of William and Denise Stenglein of Churchville, recently graduated from Allegheny College. A graduate of Churchville-Chili Senior High School, Stenglein received a bachelor of arts degree cum laude in psychology and French.

While a student at Allegheny, Stenglein participated in the following activities and organizations: Alpha Chi Omega sorority, teaching assistant for the French department and study abroad in France. She also earned honors as an Alden Scholar all four years, achieving a grade point average of 3.2 or higher.


Hartwick College freshman Michael S. Andolina of Rochester, son of Michael and Patricia Andolina, has been awarded The Helen and Howard Mayer Scholarship at Hartwick. The scholarship is given each year to support a deserving student from Western New York.

At Hartwick, Andolina has participated in Men's Varsity Football.


Sarah L. McCauley of Churchville has been named to the president's list for the spring semester at Morrisville State College. She is majoring in equine science.


Quinton L. Grant, son of Steven Grant of Hilton, recently graduated from Allegheny College. A graduate of McQuaid Jesuit High School, Grant received a bachelor of arts degree in history.


Two area students were named to the winter dean's list at the University of Dayton. They are Michelle L. McAndrews, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael McAndrews of Spencerport. McAndrews is a student in the school of education.

Christopher W. McKnight, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick McKnight of Spencerport. He is a student in the school of engineering.


Holly Snell, daughter of Patricia and Robert Snell of Kendall, has been named to the 2004 spring dean's list at Le Moyne College in Syracuse.

To be named to the dean's list, a student must obtain a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Snell, a member of the class of 2006, graduated from Kendall High School. She is majoring in accounting.


Richard Ugino, of Bitterroot Trail, Hilton, a senior majoring in drama in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, graduated with honors from Syracuse University following the completion of an honors thesis project.


Karly Suk of Hunting Spring, Rochester, a sophomore majoring in pre-dentistry in the College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University, received the Chemistry Department's CRC Handbook Award.

The CRC Handbook Award is presented annually by the Chemistry Department to an undergraduate student for exceptional academic performance in general chemistry.


The following area students enrolled in the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University were among the academic degree candidates honored at the university's 150th commencement ceremony held May 9 in the university's Carrier Dome.

Jennifer Wells, Peach Blossom Road North, Hilton. Wells received a bachelor of science degree in information management and technology.

Jeffrey Engelbrecht, Ryan's Run, Rochester. Engelbrecht received a bachelor of science degree in information management and technology.


The following area students enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University were among the academic degree candidates honored at the university's 150th commencement ceremony held May 9 in the university's Carrier Dome.

Rebecca Mesh, Hilton, bachelor's degree in mathematics.

Jacqueline Pappert, Hilton, a bachelor's degree in economics.

Kristina Visic, Hilton, a bachelor's degree in psychology.

Ryan Hickey, Spencerport, a bachelor's degree in history and social studies education.

Jessica Schubel, Brockport, a bachelor's degree in international relations and history.

Andre Fontenette, Rochester, a bachelor's degree in sociology.


Jessica Schubel of Brockport, a senior majoring in history and international relations at Syracuse University, received the International Relations Department's High Achievement award at the college's annual awards convocation held May 8.

The High Achievement award is presented by the International Relations Department to recognize scholastic excellence. Students must achieve an overall grade point average of 3.7 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) to receive this honor. She also received the Hotchkiss Prize. Established in memory of Professor William Park Hotchkiss, the Hotchkiss Prize is awarded annually by the History Department to a graduating senior who has achieved the highest level of academic excellence in history. The award carries a cash prize.


Emily Judith Georger, daughter of James Georger of Hamlin, was named to the SUNY Postdam president's list for spring 2004. She is majoring in community health.


Erin L. Barrell of Hilton and Jennifer L. Paull of Henrietta have both been named to the spring 2004 dean's list at the Watson School of Engineering and applied science at Binghamton University.


Lisa Flow, daughter of Vince and Barbara Flow of Kendall, has been named to the 2004 spring dean's list at Le Moyne College in Syracuse. Flow, a member of the class of 2001, graduated from Kendall High School. She is majoring in biology.

Emily McLean, daughter of David and Mary Lou McLean of Spencerport, has been named to the spring 2004 dean's list at St. John Fisher College in Rochester.

McLean is a freshman majoring in early childhood and special education.


Melissa M. Waddell, Rochester, has been named to the dean's list for the spring quarter at Rochester Institute of Technology. A third-year student in RIT's School of Film and Animation, Waddell is studying animation.

She is the daughter of Marilee and Jerry Waddell of North Tonawanda and is a 2001 graduate of Aquinas High School.


At the June meeting of the District 8 Ladies Auxiliary VFW held in Ovid, Phyllis Walker of Gates was elected president for the year 2004-2005. The following members were nominated and elected: Sr. Vice President Dorothy Fox; Jr. Vice President Maggie Nolan; Treasurer Lucille Slike; Chaplain Shirley Collins; Conductress Carol Ann Morales; Guard Emily Artley and Trustee #3 Kathy Delano.


Western Region's Rochester Rookies Jr. Wheelchair Sports Team has been awarded a $1,000 gift as part of the Rochester Press-Radio Club's charitable giving program. The Rookies provide, promote and develop opportunities for children with disabilities to participate in recreational and competitive wheelchair sports.

Founded in 1976 by Paralympic Gold Medalist JoAnn Armstrong, of Hilton, the team is a junior affiliate of Wheelchair Sports USA. Armstrong serves as the program's director.


Nathaniel Harold Emmerson, son of Bruce and Debbie Emmerson of Brockport, received his bachelor's degree from Denison University. Emmerson, a 2001 graduate of Brockport High School, earned a bachelor of arts degree summa cum laude with a major in Latin. Emmerson was a recipient of the President's Medal, as well as the Distinguished Leadership Award, the Trustee Scholarship, the Karl Eschman Scholarship and the Estelle King Van Beuren Endowed Memorial Scholarship. Emmerson was a University Scholar, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest academic honorary, and a senior fellow in classics. A dean's list student, he also completed the additional requirements necessary to be named an Honors Program graduate. He contributed to The Denisonian, the student newspaper, was a member of the Denison Jazz Ensemble and the Heisey Wind ensemble, served as president of Eta Sigma Phi (classics honorary), and volunteered with many community organizations.


At the annual meeting of the corporate membership for the Empire State Speech and Hearing Clinic, James Schiebel of Hamlin was elected as chairman of the Board of Directors.

The Empire State Speech and Hearing Clinic is a coeducational six week residential summer school program for students with speech and/or hearing problems. The program is located in a 400 acre camp like setting south of Ithaca. Most students are placed there by their home school although some parents enroll their children directly. This program is supported by a number of non-profit organizations including Lions Clubs.

Schiebel is a member of the Hilton Lions Club and a former Hilton science teacher. In the past, Schiebel has served three years as secretary and three years as president of the corporation. His big challenges will include recruiting potential students and raising scholarship money to assist needy families.


Thomas Kasper received a commission as second lieutenant in the United States Army in a ceremony held May 15, 2004, in the Cooper Hall New York Room. He was sworn in by his sister, First Lieutenant Terra Whipple.

Kasper recently graduated from SUNY College at Brockport with a bachelor's degree in journalism. He will attend Fort Eustis, Virginia, for Transportation Corps Officer Basic Training, and then will serve on Reserve duty.


Air Force Airman Nicholas J. Chambers has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

He is the son of Dave Chambers of Hilton and Lorene Chambers of Las Vegas. Chambers is a 2003 graduate of Chaparral High School, Las Vegas.


Army Spec. John A. Dianni has graduated from the intelligence and electronic warfare intercept systems repairer course at Fort Huachuca, Sierra Vista, Arizona.

Dianni is the son of John R. and Maryann Dianni of Hilton. He graduated in 1998 from Hilton High School and earned a bachelor's degree in 2003 from New York University.
