LVR expanding, seeking tutors

For 40 years, Literacy Volunteers of Rochester (LVR) has been improving the lives of Rochesterians by promoting literacy. Originally an affiliate of Literacy Volunteers of America, LVR was founded in 1964 by Church Women United with the premise that if each volunteer could teach one student, they could help solve the problems of illiteracy.

Fueled by the support of dedicated volunteers and motivated students who believe in that mission, LVR has since grown to serve more than 300 students yearly. Of those students, approximately one-third are enrolled in Basic tutoring, a program geared towards adults over the age of 18 who read below an eighth grade level and need help with basic reading and writing skills. The other two-thirds of LVR's learners are ESOL students, English Speakers of Other Languages who come to us in hopes of improving their conversational English. Students meet weekly with an assigned tutor who is trained in one or both of these areas of literacy. Through LVR's learner-centered approach, students outline their objectives and tutors facilitate the study of related curriculum.

As LVR continues to expand, they hope to recruit more tutors from western Monroe County to better serve the needs of the increasing student population in that area. If you are interested in becoming a tutor contact them at (585) 473-3030, stop by their office at 249 Highland Avenue, Rochester or visit the website at http://www.literacyrochester.org.
