Alan Bader, dedicated to community
When Town of Sweden assessor Alan Bader died suddenly on Thursday, June 24, the town not only lost a long-term dedicated employee, it also lost a man devoted to his community. Town of Sweden attorney James Bell said that he and Bader had been close friends since 1980. "We were not only business associates," he said. "I considered Alan to have been one of my closest personal friends." Bell said that not too many days ever went by when he and Bader didn't talk on the phone or see each other in person.
Mr. Bader, 54, died at his home on Frazier Street from heart failure. He had served as Sweden's assessor for 28 years and was the longest-serving town or village assessor in Monroe County. Mr. Bader was also liaison to the Monroe County Community Development Block Grant program and served as the town's building inspector and code enforcement officer. "The loss of Alan is a great loss to the community. He didn't just pay lip service to giving back to the community, he was involved in everything," Bell said. "He was very dedicated to the Town of Sweden and it was not a superficial job, it was sincere
he gave his life to the town."
Town of Sweden Supervisor Nat O. Lester III said, "One need only to look at the town of Sweden as a whole and you can see Alan's input everywhere. He served as the assessor/building inspector for 28 years. He played a role in most of the major projects the town undertook during nearly three decades - the establishment of the Sweden Senior Center, the acquisition of the Sweden Town Park and the opening of the Community Center. He oversaw all commercial and residential development in the town during his tenure. Alan also found time to serve his community as a fireman in the Silsby Hose Company, as a member of the Brockport Exempts, President of the Greater Brockport Chamber of Commerce, President of the Kiwanis and member of the SUNY Brockport Good Neighbor Committee."
Bell said it was Mr. Bader's influence that pushed him to become involved in municipal and community organizations. "Alan always said 'you can't always take, you have to give something back' to the community," Bell said.
Mr. Bader's job was a tough one, Bell said. "Being the tax man is not an easy task," Bell said. "There is always someone upset with you but Alan always had an open door and would always take the time to talk to people. He didn't shy away from his job."
Bell said that Mr. Bader would be best remembered for his congenial, outgoing personality. "He was always quick with a joke," he said. "Alan was articulate and very well read."
Alan Stuart Bader was born in Brooklyn on October 4, 1949. He was the son of Morton and Sabina Bader. A graduate of Baldwin High School in Long Island, he attended Baruch College in Manhattan before transferring to SUNY Brockport where he earned a bachelor's degree in psychology. He later returned and earned a master's degree in public administration.
A service was held at the Sweden-Clarkson Community Center on June 27. Bell said close to 300 people came to pay their respects to Mr. Bader.
"Those who knew Alan, knew he was a man of rare intelligence, capable of discussing any subject at great depth. He was quick-witted, insightful and always eager to share an amusing story," Lester said. He enjoyed music, literature, history, fine food and politics at all levels. I will miss him as a colleague and as a friend."
