42 area athletes and coaches
take part in Empire State games Western Monroe County and eastern Orleans and Genesee counties sent 41 athletes to the annual Empire State Games July 28-August 1 in Binghamton. From the number of players on team rosters, soccer and wrestling are represented the strongest with nine and eight athletes, respectively. Spencerport's Erin Muir will play defense and Churchville's Ashley Squires at midfield for the Women's Open soccer team while the Rangers' Samantha Hawn and Kelsey Turley anchor the back line for the Women's Scholastic team. For the men, Ryan Hickey and Kevin Thornton from Spencerport are midfielders on the Men's Open soccer team and are joined by Churchville's Nathan Wiley. The Scholastic team features Spencerport's Chris Farnsworth and Hilton's Jeremy Gaden on defense. In wrestling, Holley will supply five grapplers with Matthew Paeth in the Open Division at 213 lb. Greco-Roman and Justin Corona (192 lb. Greco-Roman), Kenneth Ryan (106 lb. Greco-Roman), Casey Doty (178 lb. Greco-Roman) and Lucas Doty (275 lb. freestyle) with Ronald Ryan as coach in the Scholastic division. Other wrestlers are Mike Collura of Spencerport (178 lb. Greco-Roman) in the Scholastic Division and SUNY Brockport grad Kris Harrington (182 lb. Greco-Roman) and Hamlin's Travis Hilbert (128 lb. freestyle) in the Open Division.
