Brockport celebrates historic moment
History will be celebrated when officials in the Village of Brockport hold a sign unveiling ceremony in front of St. Luke's Episcopal Church to celebrate the listing of its historic commercial district on the national and state registers of historic places.
Don Riling made the three signs that identify the district. In addition to the one marking its southern limit at St. Luke's, signs are being placed on Market Street and in front of the post office on Main Street. The area was designated a local historic district by the village Historic Preservation Board in 1999.
"This is official recognition by the highest national historic preservation body of the distinctive quality of our commercial district, which we believe is the best preserved Victorian business structures in the Rochester area," said Bill Andrews, member of the local board. The district includes 51 buildings plus the Main Street canal bridge.
The listing does not impose any additional restrictions on property owners and preservation of the buildings is ensured by the local designation. Mayor Josephine Matela commented that the listing is a win-win action. "This is quite an honor, calling attention to the historic significance of our village," she said.
The unveiling will take place Saturday, August 14 at noon.
