New community theater group beginning in Spencerport
Interested in community theater? A new group could offer opportunities to those interested in thespian projects.
The public is invited to attend a meeting on Tuesday, August 24 at 7 p.m. to elect a board of directors of the Port of Call Community Players. The meeting will be held in the Board of Education Meeting Room in Spencerport's Administration Building, 71 Lyell Avenue, Spencerport.
The beginning of this new theater group is to the credit of the Spencerport Central School's Superintendent Phillip Langton. He gathered past-members of the Towpath Players, a community theater group that was active in the early 60s. His goal is to offer the experience of the theater to members of the community and utilize the new Performing Arts Center in Spencerport High School.
To date, a small group as written a set of bylaws, named the group and decided on the first two productions. Neil Simon's comedy, "Come Blow Your Horn" will be presented in late fall of this year. It will feature local talent and be directed by Don Lenhard. Next summer, Terry Hedges will direct the musical "Oliver." This will be the second time for Hedges to direct this particular musical that features a large cast of adults and children.
In addition to those who will appear on stage, there are many roles for people to work behind the scenes and on the several committees needed to complete their work before the curtain.
The Port of Call Community Players is being promoted jointly by the Town of Ogden and the Continuing Education program of the Spencerport School District. The annual membership fee is $25 per person and may be paid prior to the meeting on August 24.
