C-C soccer starts 4-1
Last year, Fairport was the kingpin in boy's soccer and Churchville-Chili beat them 3-2 for their first loss of the season. This season the Saints started 4-0 before the Red Raiders came back to town and took home a 2-1 upset.
Fairport scored in the 25th minute for the only scoring of the first half. The Saints Chris Brugger came close to tying the game in the 30th minute when he one-timed a breakaway, but was stopped.
The Red Raiders extended their lead to 2-0 in the 51st minute and held the Saints in check until the last 25 minutes of the game. Off a corner kick, Mike Malone put it on the foot of Brugger who shot wide. Brugger had another opportunity from the top of the box with less than ten minutes left, but the goalie was able to cover.
With 1:55 remaining, the Saints finally broke through when Malone sent a low corner kick into the box. Brugger couldn't get a head on it, but Erick O'Brien drilled the loose ball in to cut the lead to one. The Saints picked up their attack for the final seconds but could not convert.
"This was the first time we have been down in a game all season and we took awhile to know how to react," said Saints head coach Ryan Raftery. C-C was ranked second in Section Five and Fairport was third before the game and the Saints have outscored their opponents 21-4 this season.
