Join the geocaching fun at Genesee Region State Parks
The Genesee State Park Region will be hosting "Geocaching Genesee" in conjunction with the New York Geocaching Organization (NYGO) on September 25 and 26. Geocaching is a rapidly growing recreational activity best described as a high-tech treasure hunt. Participants search for hidden caches containing log books and a variety of unique items by using a hand held GPS (Global Positioning System) unit.
The events consist of informational sessions led by NYGO members that will describe the activity and demonstrate how to use a GPS unit. Participants will then search the parks for caches based on the clues and coordinates given. The events will be held on Saturday, September 25 at Letchworth State Park and Sunday, September 26 at Darien Lakes State Park. Both events are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Letchworth location will be at the St. Helena Shelter whose GPS coordinates are N 42 37.008, W 077 59.814. The Darien Lakes location will be at Shelter #2 whose coordinates are N 42 54.452, W 078 25.880.
Participants are encouraged to bring GPS units with them if possible, there will be a limited number on hand for public use. There are no admission fees for the events. The only charge is the normal $6 per car vehicle use fees to enter the parks. For information call the Letchworth Park office at (585) 493-3600 or Darien Lakes State Park at (585) 547-9242.
