Bullard hat trick leads Bees
Sophomore Bobby Bullard scored three goals and Jon Flannery added two assists as Byron Bergen shutout rival Kendall 4-0 in boy's soccer at Jurh's Field in Kendall.
The Bees took an early 1-0 lead when Chris Grimm sent Bullard down the right side with a long lead pass off a free kick. Bullard's shot deflected off the far post and in. Just minutes later, Flannery and Bullard hooked up for a 2-0 Bees lead.
The Eagles countered with several offensive chances as Mike Moore hit the crossbar and just missed the far post on consecutive rushes.
Byron-Bergen then made it 3-0 when Flannery sent Magnus Drtina in alone with another long lead pass. Drtina chipped over the goalkeeper and put it in for the half-time advantage.
Bullard completed his second hat trick in three games in the 50th minute of the game. This time Mike Barnard set up Bullard, who dribbled around the goalkeeper and put it in the empty net for a 4-0 lead. It was also Bullard's 7th goal in the last three games.
Kendall threatened in the second half when Pat Dorney broke in on the Bees net in the 55th minute and shot wide, but a penalty kick was awarded. Goalkeeper Nick Mieney was able to stop the penalty kick with a diving save to preserve the shutout.
"Some days we're up and some days we're down," said Bees head coach Will Fitzpatrick. "We're very young and we'll take our knocks, but we'll be there in a race for the league title in the end I think."
Byron-Bergen improved to 2-2 and Kendall fell to 2-3.
