BPD recommended for accreditation
Following many months of hard work, the Brockport Police Department underwent its accreditation process on October 12, 13 and 14.
"The accreditation went great," Mayor Josephine Matela said. "The three gentlemen who made up the accreditation team had more than 100 years combined experience and they said by the time they were done here that they were pleased with the results."
Police Chief Dan Varrenti reported at the October 18 board meeting that the process went smoothly and that a report will be issued outlining the accreditation outcomes. "We feel confident that we will receive the designation," Varenti said. 'The team said we would be recommended for accreditation."
If the Brockport Police Department receives accreditation it will boost Monroe County into one of the first counties in New York state to have had all its departments accredited.
The final recommendation is expected to be announced in early December, Varrenti said.
Varrenti also reported at the board meeting that his officers have responded to 11,081 calls year to date. He also reported that 13 driving while intoxicated arrests were made in the last quarter and all of those arrests exceeded the .08 blood alcohol limit. "That means that individual had at least four or five drinks in the course of an hour before getting behind the wheel," he said.
The department has also adopted a new general order relative to sex offender registration and dissemination of information. "We're just taking a proactive role in letting residents know if there are level one, two or three offenders living in the village," he said.
Police departments are prohibited as to the type of information they are allowed to release relative to the offender, based on their offense level. Sergeant Mark Philippy was designated as the department's sex offender registry coordinator.
