Matthew J. Dudek, a junior majoring in French and history at Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, is participating in the college's study abroad program in Toulouse, France, for the 2004-05 academic year. A graduate of Brockport High School, he is the son of Gary and Mary Ann Dudek of Brockport.
McQuaid Jesuit High School Senior Kipp Hebert, of Churchville, was named as a semi-finalist in the 2004-2005 National Merit Scholarship competition. As a semi-finalist, he will advance to the next round of competition for the 8,200 merit scholarship awards, worth more than $33.9 million this spring.
Michelle Bloser from Churchville, a math major with a triple minor in business, intercultural studies and biology at Houghton College, was named to the list recognizing Who's Who Among American College and University Students. Bloser is a member of the gospel choir, an FYI Leader, CAB Assistant Director/Treasurer, class treasurer and climbing club treasurer. She has also assisted in editing a textbook written by one of her professors. She has spent spring semester of her Junior year studying off-campus on the Tanzania program and this past summer working at an actuarial internship in Rochester.
A nominating committee consisting of Houghton faculty, staff and students selected the 25 outstanding leaders. Director of Student Programs Greg Bish said the committee considers the following five criteria for selecting students: scholarship, citizenship and service to the college, Christian maturity, leadership in academic and extracurricular activities, and potential for future achievement.
Ryan Toyama has graduated from Ithaca College with a bachelor of science degree in cinema and photography with a concentration in cinema production. He spent the first semester of his senior year on an internship in Los Angeles and completed his degree in December 2003. He attended graduation with his class in May 2004.
Toyama was the recipient of the James B. Pendleton Cinema & Photography Award and Dean's Scholarship. He is the son of Thomas and Cheryl Toyama of Churchville.
Chief Petty Officer Select Christopher Laird, son-in-law of Earl and Eileen Flint of Brockport was recently promoted to his current rank.
Laird was one of 300 selectees who was chosen to train on board the historic ship, USS Constitution, homeported in Boston and learn what life was like for the sailors of yesteryear.
Laird has now returned to his command, USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), homeported in Norfolk, Virginia.
Mark Petro, Spencerport resident, has successfully completed eight weeks of basic training at the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May, New Jersey. He is assigned to the USCG Buffalo, NY Station as a Seaman Apprentice in the USCG Reserves. He is also completing his senior year at Spencerport High School.
