Model United Nations meets in Hilton Nov. 12-13
The 25th annual Hilton Model United Nations will be held November 12 and 13 at both Hilton's Merton Williams Middle School and Hilton High School. There will be more than 700 students from high schools across western New York state in attendance from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, November 12 and continuing at 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, November 13. According to Hilton MUN Advisor Bob Phillips, the keynote speaker on November 12 at 3 p.m. is Karla J. Cunningham, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science and International Relations SUNY Geneseo who will speak about the issue of cooperation in Iraq and the effect of the war efforts on the spread of terrorism.
The Keynote Address will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room of Merton Williams Middle School, 200 School Lane, Hilton. Students will then be dispersed to both the Middle School and shuttled to the High School for committee and assembly meetings which will address such issues as cloning, international environmental protection, international courts of justice, and other topics. Co-Secretary Generals are Hilton High School Juniors Brian Jacek and Brad Sawyer.
The Model United Nation works like the real United Nations with debates following parliamentary rules; resolutions being presented at the General Assembly and working their way through committees; and delegates from each MUN school prepared to represent 'their country.' Students are judged on diplomacy, speaking, representation, quality of debating, and overall ability. All students are encouraged to speak at the conference and if a crisis should arise, which it often does, delegates are expected to give an accurate representation of their country's views on that area.
