Sweden appoints new town clerk
The newly elected receiver of taxes in the Town of Sweden was appointed to the position of town clerk by town officials at the November 9 meeting.
Karen Sweeting, who recently ran unopposed for the position of receiver of taxes, was appointed to fill the town clerk position vacated by Janet Olivieri who cited personal reasons for her resignation. Olivieri was appointed to fill the town clerk position vacated by Gail DeToy upon her retirement in early 2004.
Kathy Roberts will fill the receiver of taxes position. Both Sweeting and Roberts will have to run for election in 2005 to retain their posts. The appointments were effective immediately.
Town of Sweden Supervisor Nat O. "Buddy" Lester accepted Olivieri's resignation with regret. "I have complete confidence in the appointments that were made here tonight," he said.
Prior to her appointment as town clerk, Sweeting had served as receiver of taxes since March of 2004. Previously she had worked as a court clerk.
"I'm excited about this new position," Sweeting said. "Being town clerk gives me the opportunity to serve the public in a different capacity."
Sweeting and her husband, life-long resident Rob Sweeting, have three children, Michael, Daniel and James.
