Two Monroe County residents have each been awarded scholarships to attend Alfred State College. They are: Cody Rath of Hamlin who received an Excellence in Education Scholarship. Rath is slated to graduate in 2005 from Kendall Jr./Sr. High School and intends to enroll in the mechanical engineering technology (BS) program.

Julian Fulcher of Hilton was awarded an Educational Foundation Academic Distinction Scholarship. Fulcher is slated to graduate in 2005 from Hilton Central School and intends to enroll in the computer technology (BS) program.


Phi Theta Kappa inducted 87 of the highest-achieving Monroe Community College students during a November 7 ceremony. The students were honored for their academic success and involvement in college and community activities.

Phi Theta Kappa is the honor society for the nation's two-year colleges. To be considered for membership, students must have earned at least 18 credits toward their degree, with at least 15 of those credits earned at MCC, and have a grade-point average of 3.75 or higher.

Following are the fall 2004 inductees into MCC's Alpha Theta Iota chapter of Phi Theta Kappa who are area residents.

  • Brockport - Katherine Joy Brownhill, East Avenue, Lucas R. VanDervort, West Avenue.
  • Churchville - Christopher Nesbitt - Palmer Road.
  • Chili - Catherine J. Carpenter, Wellington Ponds.
  • Gates - Mark J. Antinore, Capri Drive.
  • Hamlin - Katrina M. Reagan, North Hamlin Road.
  • Hilton - Jennifer L. Reynolds, Underwood Avenue, Ryan G. Sullivan, Huffer Road.
  • Ogden - Melanie Brumbaugh, Windsorshire Drive.
  • Spencerport - Sarah Abbamonte, Silkwood Circle, Natalia Fortygin, Kadrie Way.

The following students have been named to the dean's list at SUNY Geneseo for the 2004 spring semester: Amanda Gaesser of Kendall; Erin Baker, Elaine Dean, Meghan Weinpress and Carly Wisotzke all of Spencerport; Allison Roether of Churchville; Wendy Zingaro of Hilton; and Sheena McMillan of Holley.


State University of New York at Fredonia junior Christina Dudek of Churchville appeared with the Hillman Opera Chorus in the presentation of Leonard Bernstein's "Candide." A vocal performance major, Dudek is a member of the Churchville-Chili High School Class of 2002 and the daughter of Matthew and Jeanne Dudek of Churchville.


PFC Benjamin Hughes, son of David and Betsy Hughes of Brockport, has been promoted to the rank of specialist. He is an M1A1 Abrams tank repair and recovery technician currently serving at Camp Casey in South Korea. He will be re-assigned to the 4th Infantry Division and stationed at Fort Hood, Texas in January 2005.


Navy Seaman Apprentice Brett W. McCarthy, son of Maureen and Thomas McCarthy of Hilton, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois

McCarthy is a 2004 graduate of Hilton High School.
