Blue Devils fall to Aquinas
After a scoreless first period, Aquinas scored two goals in the second period and two more in the third to defeat Brockport 4-1 and win their own Thanksgiving Hockey Tournament held at Lakeshore Rinks.
Two freshmen started the scoring for the Little Irish with John Mousso and Billy Lemen netting goals. Midway through the third period, Aquinas made it 3-0 when senior Steve Popham one-timed a pass from behind the net.
Brockport's Ryan Filipowicz scored off a scramble in front of the Aquinas net with less than three minutes remaining to break up the shutout bid by goaltender Scott Mertz. Eric McJury and Lucas Spence were credited with assists on the play.
The Blue Devils then pulled goal tender Troy LaDue for the extra attacker in the final moments, but Aquinas scored into the empty net from center ice to seal the game.
Aquinas outshot the Blue Devils 34-22 in the game though Brockport registered 13 of those in the third period in the comeback attempt. LaDue made 30 saves for the visiting Blue Devils who fell to 0-2 on the season after also losing in the first round to Shaker-Colonie 4-1.
