Reilich urges citizens to volunteer for fire/EMS services

Assemblyman Bill Reilich (R,C,I-Greece) encourages constituents to become volunteers in their local fire and emergency medical service organizations.

"The individuals who are members give graciously of their time and energies on behalf of their communities," Reilich said. "But, volunteers are always needed to fill spots that become vacant or fill shortages in personnel."

According to Reilich, there is a shortage of volunteer firefighters throughout New York state and, specifically, in Monroe County. Volunteer fire departments and EMS agencies play a vital role in protecting the safety and property of residents, businesses and visitors.

According to Reilich, members of volunteer fire departments may be entitled to injury compensation under the Volunteer Firefighters Benefit Law; company- and state-sponsored training; social and organizational benefits; and retirement incentives in some departments.

"Men and women are needed in the volunteer firefighter/EMS ranks if the departments are to continue to protect the public's safety," Reilich said. "I urge all those interested to apply."

For information on becoming a volunteer firefighter, contact local fire departments, or the Monroe County Fire Coordinator Office at 585-279-4050, or visit the New York state Office of Fire Prevention and Control web site at www.dos.state.ny.us/fire.
