Fire Police celebrate 50 years

In 1954, a group of concerned members of the Brockport Fire Department, led by former Monroe County Under Sheriff John "Jack" Kinicutt, joined together to form the Brockport Fire Department Fire Police Squad. The squad is an organization made up of Active Firemen trained in Traffic and Crowd Control at emergency scenes.

Per New York State Fire Laws, all active members have taken the New York State Fire Police training course and are sworn peace officers in the State of New York.

On Sunday, December 5, the Fire Police Squad of the Brockport Fire Department celebrated their 50th Anniversary. Many past and current active members gathered at the Brockport Firemen's Exempts Club on West Avenue for a Dinner Party. In attendance were Robert Iveson, who joined the squad in 1957 and the newest member, Ron Koss, who joined this last summer. Squad First Lieutenant Al Way, who has been active in the squad since 1972, acted as Master of Ceremonies. Village of Brockport Mayor Jo Matella read a Proclamation that would be read into the minutes of the next Village Board Meeting. The Proclamation commended the Fire Police Squad for its 50 years of continuous service to the department and the community.

Brockport Fire Department Chief Chris McCullough presented the squad with a plaque commending the squad for their 50 years of service and support. Squad First Lieutenant Al Way, Second Lieutenant Bob Maid and Third Lieutenant Bob Zimny, presented Retiring Squad Captain Ken Keim with a personalized firefighter statuette, commending him for all that he has done for the squad, working diligently at upgrading the personnel safety equipment of the squad.
