Brockport students "Do The Right Thing"
Two Brockport students have been honored for doing the right thing when faced with emergency situations. Justin Holberton, a seventh-grader at Oliver Middle School, and Kayla Pack, a fourth-grader at Hill Elementary, both received "Do The Right Thing" Awards from the Rochester Police Department at the Public Safety Building on December 16.
On August 20, Justin and his dad, Leon, witnessed a plane crash on family property in Clarkson. They called rescuers on his dad's cell phone. Knowing that it would be difficult for the emergency responders to find the site, Justin went out to the road and waited for the emergency personnel. He directed the emergency personnel back to where the plane had crashed. Unfortunately, one person did not survive, but Justin remained calm, and did whatever he could to help. Nurse Anne Johnson nominated Justin for his award.
On November 11, while Kayla and her mother, Amy, along with a couple of friends, went horseback riding, one of the friends, Christine Johnson, was thrown off her horse when it got spooked. When Christine landed, she broke the second vertebrae in her neck. Kayla's friend went to call for help, Amy Pack gathered the horses, and Kayla stayed with Christine to keep her calm until help arrived. Both Christine, and her husband, Michael, who nominated Kayla for the award, said they are thankful for the help, especially for Kayla maintaining a level head during the accident.
Rochester Police Chief Robert J. Duffy and Mayor William A. Johnson, Jr. presented the students with their awards. In addition to the prestigious awards, the students received prize packages that included a picnic at Seabreeze Amusement Park, a backpack with school supplies, a Kodak Advantix camera, Rochester team baseball and hockey tickets, toys and a donation to their schools.
