Hunter's late shot leads Roberts
Christine Hunter's basket with the shot clock running down and just six seconds remaining led Roberts Wesleyan back from a 16-point deficit to defeat Walsh University 78-75 in women's basketball. The win gave the Raiders a second place finish behind Sioux Falls in the Wellesley Inn Tournament at the Voller Athletic Center.
Roberts fell behind in the first half before Judy Wright scored seven unanswered points at the end of the half cut the Walsh lead to nine points. Wright opened the second half with a lay-up to cut into the deficit further before the teams exchanged baskets through the next ten minutes of play.
The Raiders then chipped away with a three-pointer from Kim Bratt, a freethrow from Fallon Scoot (Churchville-Chili) and a jump shot from Wright to pull within three points with 9:15 left.
Another three-pointer from Bratt and an offensive rebound putback by Nikki Shackelton gave the Raiders their first lead of the second half. The two teams exchanged the lead seven more times leading to Hunter's late game winner. Wright added a lay-up at the buzzer for the three-point margin.
Wright led all scorers with 31 points while Hunter scored 16 to go with a team-high eight rebounds and Bratt registered 13 points in the game. Wright leads the American Mideast Conference and is among the nation's leaders in Division II averaging over 26 points per game with over 4.5 steals per game. The Raiders improved to 11-3 on the season with the victory and remain unbeaten in their conference.
