Sandy Creek Academy's students learn to make pottery
The students at Sandy Creek Academy in Holley have been busy learning and having fun at the same time. In addition to the regular curriculum, the third through seventh graders have been learning about the culture of the Pueblo Indian tribes of the American Southwest Four Corners Region. Students learned the importance of pottery in native culture and the meanings of the symbols that appear on much of the pottery.
Deborah Wilson, the artist in residence, instructed the students in making their own piece of pottery. In November, an outdoor kiln was constructed by the students on the school grounds and the pottery was fired.
The entire school participated in creating pieces of pottery which will be on display at the Holley Free Library on Main Street.
