Recap of the 25th Clayton Barnard Memorial Wrestling Tournment
The 25th Anniversary Clayton Barnard Memorial Wrestling Tournament was held at Hilton Central School on Friday and Saturday, January 14 and 15. The tournament is dedicated to the memory of Clayton Barnard, former co-captain of two Hilton wrestling teams, 1971-73. He was Hiltons first Monroe County Champion in nine years and Hiltons first Section Five Tournament Champion, winning the John Ordway Trophy for the most outstanding wrestler in that tournament. He went on to win many more honors as a wrestler at Ashland College. He died of leukemia in 1978 (as noted in the tournament brochure). Eighteen schools participated in this years event with Spencerport winning the overall title, Holley was second, Canandaigua was third and Hilton finished fourth. The outstanding wrestler of the tournament award went to Hiltons Mark Ranzenbach. All match pictures were taken during the finals by Walter Horylev.

Nick Terenzi, Spencerport, was on top in his match with Nathan Skiba, Kenmore West, and pinned him in 2:26 in a fast-moving 96 pound weight class match.

In the 103 pound weight class, Hiltons Corey Maggio extends an arm for balance. He lost 6-0 to Corinths Ed Galvin.

In an exciting 112 pound match Hiltons Mark Ranzenbach, on top in this picture, won over Baldwins Shaun Farnham 6-4 with time running out in an overtime period.

Hiltons Joe Ranzenbach applies pressure to the right leg of Canandaiguas Rob Mack. He won the 125 pound weight class with a score of 11-5.

There was lots of excitement in this 140 pound match between Spencerports Dan Tomasso, on top at this point, and Waterloos Josh Mateo. Dan won 11-3.

Spencerports Bryan Bourne, on left, lost a thriller to Al Gianforti, Canandaigua, 3-2 in two overtimes in the 145 pound weight class.

In the 152 pound weight class, Spencerports Adam Snook has a heads up on Genevas Mark Bloom but eventually lost 8-4.

The 160 pound weight class featured a last minute come from behind 4-3 win by Spencerports Mike Collura over Holleys Rob McElwain (front).

Holleys Justin Corona is in danger but eluded a pin from Pavilions Tyler Luders in this 189 pound match; Justin finally lost 11-9.

Rangers win 8th straight Barnard Memorial
Four Spencerport wrestlers won their weight class and two others advanced to the finals as the Rangers won their eighth consecutive and 17th overall Clayton Barnard Wrestling Tournament held at Hilton. This year marked the 25th year of the tournament held in honor of Hilton's first Section V Tournament Champion and Section V Hall of Famer Clayton Barnard, who died of leukemia at the age of 24 in 1978. Eighteen schools in all competed in this year's two-day tourney.
Nick Terenzi, Dan Tomasso, Mike Collura and Tom Rodak all won their final matches for the Rangers as they finished the tournament with 280.5 points. Holley, led by Ron Ryan who won the 215-lb. class, finished second with 215 points. Host Hilton was fourth behind Canandaigua thanks to first place titles by Mark Ranzenbach at 112 lb. and Joe Ranzenbach at 125 lb. Mark Ranzenbach was named the Outstanding Wrestler and won the Aggregate Pin Award for most pins in the least amount of time.
Terenzi won at 96 lb. with a pin in the quarterfinals, a technical fall in the semi-finals and by pin in 2:26 in the finals. Tomasso won by pin in the first round in 2:54, won a major decision in the quarterfinals 14-3, won the semi's 3-1 and the final 11-3. Collura picked up 6-0 and 5-4 wins in the first two rounds at 160 lb. before pinning his man in 3:29 in the semi's and beating Holley's Rob McElwain in the final 4-3. Rodak took the quarterfinal by pin in 58 seconds, won the semi's 1-0 and the final 2-1. Bryan Bourne and Adam Snook were second at 145 lb. and 152 lb. respectively.
Hilton's Mark Ranzenbach won at 112 lb. by pin in the first round in 24 seconds, the quarterfinals in 2:59 and the semi's in 23 seconds before winning the final 6-4 in overtime. Joe Ranzenbach won the first round by pin in 21 seconds at 125 lb., took a major 19-10 decision in the quarters and a 44 second pin in the semi's before winning the final 11-5. Cory Maggio and Jon Veleri finished second in their weight classes for the Cadets.
Holley's Ron Ryan picked up a major decision in the quarterfinals and a pin in the semi's and won the final 3-2. Besides McElwain, Justin Corona also took second place in his weight class.
