Students look for "LifeSavers"
Students at the Brockport Central Oliver Middle School are joining the worldwide relief effort, collecting money to benefit tsunami victims. Members of teams 6-1 and 6-2 are "Looking for LifeSavers."
Students who are able to donate at least one dollar receive a certificate. Following the collections, they will be delivered a treat of LifeSavers candy as a thank you for their generosity.
Volunteer sixth grade student fundraiser Aylesia Adams says collections were busy at times and other students seemed glad to help. "We've been learning about the disaster in class. Our social studies teacher, Leslie Bull, showed us how tsunamis are formed and we got to see the devastation over there." Another social studies teacher, Mary Pittman, is also helping coordinate the relief effort.
The faculty at Oliver Middle School is behind the sixth graders, pledging to match donations up to $500.
Proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross or UNICEF's Tsunami Relief fund. Collections continued through Friday, February 4.
The effort at the middle school supplemented fund drives at other Brockport schools, including the Barclay Elementary School and High School.
