Bees girls win second straight title
Long sets school record
Byron-Bergen received a second, third and fifth place finish from Ashley Currier, Naomi Hickey and Emily Starowitz in the 100-yard Breaststroke to overcome a nine-point deficit to Attica and win their second consecutive Genesee Region Swimming & Diving League Championship.
The Lady Bees began the meet third in the 200-yard Medley Relay. Kristine Lovett, Hickey, Emma Long and Alicia Sharp finished in 2:07.92 - just one-half second off the school record. Lovett and Kristy Lynn Madziarz were fifth and sixth in the 200-yard Freestyle and Long, Joanna Menzie and Currier finished sixth, eighth and ninth in the 200-yard Individual Medley.
A second place finish by Sharp in the 50-yard Freestyle in :28.64 put the Bees in second place - eight points behind Attica. That gap was closed during the next event as Long set a new school record in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:08.15 and Hickey finished fourth.
Sharp was seventh in the 100-yard Freestyle and Madziarz was sixth in the 500-yard Freestyle before the Bees finished strong. A fourth and a seventh place finish in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay was followed by a sixth and seventh in the 100 yard Backstroke prior to the Breaststroke. Byron-Bergen clinched the 2005 title with Madziarz, Briana Jeffords, Menzie and Sam Peters finishing sixth in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay and the team of Brittany Snyder, Elizabeth Nagel, Michelle Salvia and Mallorie Higgins finishing eighth.
For the boys, seventh-grader Sean O'Neill had a strong meet as he finished seventh in the 200-yard Individual Medley, tenth in the 100-yard Breaststroke and ninth with Matt Starowitz, Chris Haywood and Pat Carr in the meet-ending 400 yard Freestyle Relay. Carr earlier was sixth in the 500-yard Freestyle and eighth in the 200-yard Freestyle.
