Chili Public Library open on Sundays
Assemblymember Susan John (131st District) secured $8,400 for the Chili Public Library, allowing the facility to stay open on Sundays.
"It would be a shame to see the library close on its busiest day because of a small budget shortfall, causing a major inconvenience to many Chili residents," Bernadette Foster, director of the Chili Library, said. "The library is an extremely popular venue in town, serving thousands of residents. I applaud John's efforts in securing the funding that will keep the library open on Sundays and ensure that we continue serving our community."
Sixty percent of Chili's residents own library cards, and a double-digit increase in library traffic is being driven by seniors, the unemployed seeking job opportunities and the town's home-schooled community, which is the largest in Monroe County.
"At a time when the governor is cutting education funding in many school districts like Wheatland-Chili, it would be devastating for the library to scale back its hours," John said. "I'll continue trying to assist the Chili Public Library and I am committed to working with my colleagues to work toward a real solution to this library funding imbalance."
